And it was so, when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, as she came in at the door, that he said, Come in, thou wife of Jeroboam; why feignest thou thyself to be another? for I am sent to thee with heavy tidings.
When Ahijah heard her footsteps as she came to the door, he said, 'Come in, wife of Jeroboam! Why are you pretending to be someone else? God has sent me to give you terrible news.'
The prophet Ahijah immediately saw through Jeroboam's wife's disguise and warned her that he had devastating news from God to deliver.
📚 Historical Context
In the divided kingdom period after Solomon's reign, King Jeroboam of Israel had turned away from God by promoting idolatry, which led to divine judgment against his family. When Jeroboam's son fell ill, he sent his wife disguised as a commoner to the prophet Ahijah to seek a favorable prophecy. Ahijah, an elderly prophet who had previously foretold Jeroboam's rise to power, immediately recognized her deception and delivered a harsh message from God.
